Cataract Surgery

Also known as phacoemulsification, cataract surgery is the most commonly performed surgery in the world. Nearly three million Americans undergo cataract surgery annually. By removing the opaque cataractous lens opacities through a small incision and replacing it with a clear intraocular lens implant vision can be restored to patients safely and with minimal discomfort. The lens is removed by ultrasound and the incisions are so small that no sutures are typically necessary.

This surgery is performed under conscious sedation, meaning you are given IV medications to keep you very relaxed but awake. The surgery is generally quick and comfortable. It is done at the Specialty Surgery Center here in Syracuse.
